5 Plumbing Tips & Tricks That You Can’t Believe You Didn’t Think Of

We’re always coming up with new and innovative ways to conquer common plumbing problems. Here are some of the more creative plumbing tips we suggest when taking care of issues in your home.

  1. Let’s start with being prepared to do the job. If you are planning to shut off the water to your home for any period of time, fill a large bucket (2 to 5 gallons) with water before starting a project. (If you have kids, fill 2). This will allow you to use the toilet and still flush away anything you might not want to have sitting around for a while.
  2. Here’s one that we came up with by trying it on an old sink in the garage. Take a can of expanding spray foam insulation and spray it in between and around the underside of dual sinks to deaden the sound of running water into the empty basin.
  3. Speaking of the sink – if your spray hose keeps getting stuck on the shut off valves beneath your sink, cover the valve with insulating pipe foam (the grey tubular type). The sprayer won’t get caught anymore!
  4. If your toilet gets clogged with a bunch of toilet paper or a particularly large deposit, put a few drops of dish detergent and 2 cups of hot water in the bowl. The hot water will break up the organics and the soap will lubricate the clog allowing it to pass through the system.
  5. Here’s one that might save you a ton of cash – especially if your laundry area is carpeted. Purchase stainless steel water lines for the back of your washing machine. If the washer is loaded unevenly, it can bounce around and break the rubber hoses that come with the machine. Steel lines won’t break and you won’t have an expensive insurance claim.
